A service was held on Tuesday 15 November 2022 to mark the sinking of HMS AVENGER during WWII 80 years ago to the day. The Escort Carrier was torpedoed west of Gibraltar with a huge loss of life; of the 526 officers and men on board, only 12 survived. Among those who perished were 127 Fleet Air Arm men. This will be an open but non voting meeting for members of the public. One of the last living links with the legendary 'Great Escape' from German POW camp Stalag Luft III in Sagan (now Żagań, Poland) has been severed with the death of former Fleet Air Arm pilot Captain Vyvyan Howard, aged 102. As the sun sets on the Falklands Conflict 40th anniversary commemorative events, we remember everyone who lost their lives in the hostilities and those who continue to live with the aftermath of those 74 days in 1982. Forty years ago today Naval Airman (Aircraft Handler) Brian Marsden lost his battle for life aboard HMS INVINCIBLE. Naval Airman Marsden had been severely injured in a Flight Deck tractor accident in atrocious sea conditions the previous day.
Just two days after the Argentine surrender, Naval Airman Marsden was the last of the nineteen Fleet Air Arm fatalities during the Falkland Conflict. The response from Fleet Air Arm Falklands veterans has been quite overwhelming and we look forward to welcoming them on what will be an extremely poignant day. The following services, with the Eucharist, will take place during Holy Week:
Palm Sunday 10 April 2022 at 10:30 am Maundy Thursday 14 April 2022 at 7:00 pm Good Friday 15 April 2022 at 3:00 pm Easter Day 17 April 2022 at 10:30 am All are welcome. The will be a service on the evening of Wednesday 2 March 2022 at 7:00pm signifying the start of Lent and will include Holy Communion.
All are welcome. Earlier today an act of remembrance for the thirteen Fleet Air Arm men who perished on Operation Fuller took place in the church. The service started at 12:30pm to correspond with the time that the six Fairey Swordfish biplanes left Kent on their fateful mission over the English Channel.
