Prayers were said this morning in church for the 360 people who perished 85 years ago when the SS Almeda Star was sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean by a German U-boat.
On board were 142 Fleet Air Arm personnel (21 officers and 121 ratings) from 749, 750, and 752 Squadrons who were deploying to Royal Naval Air Station Piarco on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. This tragic incident represents the highest number of deaths in a single event suffered in naval aviation history to date.
